Cool places to visit in Nairobi, Kenya.

Nairobi a.k.a. City of the Sun, is Kenya’s capital city; is known for a lot of things and it’s always an amazing city to visit.

I would recommend tourists  to do while in Nairobi are:

1. Nairobi National Park

Nairobi is the only capital city in the world with a national park within its environs. The park is a mere 10-minute drive from the city center and offers visitors the chance to sight a variety of interesting animal species including the Big Five (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard). Additionally the park has an animal orphanage. In fact, you can even 'adopt' one of these cute animals like famous figures like US Secretary of Defense John Kerry and the fastest man on Earth, Usain Bolt have. Awesome, right?

2. Karen Blixen museum

This museum is dedicated to Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa, a book that was made into a multiple Oscar winning film starring the one and only Meryl Streep. It is on the actual farm from the book/film's iconic opening line "I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong hills." It's no longer a farm now per se, but it still offers an interesting look into what life was like for the early settlers in Africa and should be an interesting visit, especially for tourists from the Scandinavian countries like Karen Blixen was and also for fans of Meryl Streep's work.

3. The Kenya Archives

Smack in the city center, this is place is majorly ignored by both locals and foreign visitors. The Archives offers an interesting look into Kenya's past and the rich cultures of its various communities. It is therefore a visit especially recommended for people with an interest in African history, both political and cultural. It also features various pieces of art like paintings and sculptures by local artists, but the cultural artifacts are the major draw. If you've ever wondered how traditional Africans got by without modern tools and things like that, you definitely should go here.

4. Uhuru Park

There really isn't too much to see here. But if you're interested in sitting in the shade on a sunny afternoon in the city in the sun, this is definitely a good spot. A quaint little park right in the city to relax, nap or have a picnic, Uhuru Park is a lovely and calm haven in the bustling city. It has history as well, with the late Wangari Mathai's efforts to preserve the park being one of the contributing factors towards her becoming the first African woman Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2004.

5. Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC)

Another little-appreciated spot, the KICC is not just good for meetings and conferences. The Helipad at the top of one of Nairobi's taller buildings allows for a rather nice panoramic view of the city. For a fee of $3-5, you can get a birds-eye view of the city in all its glory and maybe choose a few more places to visit from up there.

I would really encourage everyone able to visit Kenya to do so as it's a very beautiful country and actually quite safe, despite what you might have heard. We do have challenges, but if you stick to your embassy's instructions on where not to go, have your wits about you and generally use common sense, you should be alright.
